Why We Chose the Forest River R Pod RP153: A Personal Comparison of Forest River’s Small Single Axle Trailers

2027 R-Pod RP190 Shown
When we started shopping for a small travel trailer, we knew exactly what we wanted: something between 14 and 22 feet, single axle, easy to tow, and packed with real features — not just marketing buzzwords. Forest River has a huge lineup, but only a handful of their trailers fit those strict criteria. That made our comparison surprisingly focused, and ultimately, it made our decision clear. After over a year of research, walkthroughs, and comparing specs, we chose the Forest River R Pod RP153. Here’s why. Looking Only at the Right Size and Axle Class Forest River builds everything from massive fifth wheels to lightweight adventure rigs, but most of their trailers fall outside the range we were interested in.
We narrowed our search to: • 14–22 feet long • Single axle only • Traditional towables (no fifth wheels)
That left us with three realistic Forest River families: 1. R Pod 2. Cascade (single axle models) 3. Viking (3K/4K series) All three are lightweight and towable by midsize SUVs, but the similarities end there.
Cascade vs Viking vs R Pod: What Really Matters We weren’t just comparing floor plans. We were comparing construction, features, comfort, off grid capability, and real-world usability.
Construction Quality • R Pod: Azdel composite walls, aluminum framing, heated underbelly • Cascade: Lightweight but more budget-oriented • Viking: Basic, entry-level construction The R Pod immediately stood out. It felt solid, modern, and built to last.
Standard Features This is where the RP153 pulled ahead fast. • Solar package • Tankless on-demand hot water • 15,000 BTU A/C • Goodyear tires • TPMS • Central vacuum • Winegard digital TV antenna • Smart TV • Interior and exterior Bluetooth speakers Cascade and Viking simply don’t offer this level of equipment in the same size and weight class.
Towability All three are light, but the R Pod strikes the best balance between weight and features. It’s easy to tow without feeling stripped down. Interior Comfort The RP153 feels like a modern, thoughtfully designed space. Cascade is comfortable but simpler. Viking is functional but basic.
Off Grid Capability The RP153’s solar, tankless water heater, and efficient 12V fridge make it the clear winner. No unit was able to run the AC off-grid.
Cargo Carrying Capacity Cascade has the highest CCC on paper, but the RP153’s CCC is more than enough for two people traveling smartly.
Why the R Pod RP153 Won for Us After comparing everything side-by-side, the RP153 wasn’t just the best option — it was the only one that checked all our boxes. 1. The Perfect Size for Two At 17' 3", it’s compact enough to tow anywhere but spacious enough inside to feel comfortable. The layout is open, bright, and functional. 2. Fully Equipped Without Needing Upgrades We didn’t want a trailer that required thousands of dollars in add-ons just to be usable. The RP153 comes ready for real camping right from the factory. 3. True Comfort Features The RP153 includes things you normally only see on larger trailers: • Tankless hot water • 15K A/C • Efficient 12V refrigerator/freezer • Electric tongue jack • Retractable awning • Heated tanks It feels like a “complete” trailer, not a starter model. 4. Great for Off-Grid or Full Hookups Whether we’re at a campground or boondocking, the RP153 is designed to handle both with ease. 5. Towable With Our Existing Vehicle No truck required. No stress on mountain grades. Just easy towing.
The Bottom Line Forest River offers several small single axle trailers, but when you compare them closely, the R Pod RP153 rises to the top. It has the best construction, the best feature set, the best comfort, and the best balance of weight and capability. For us, it wasn’t just the best Forest River trailer in the 14–22 ft single axle class — it was the best trailer for how we actually travel. And now that we’ve spent time with it, we’re even more confident we made the right choice.
Note on 2027 R Pod Models (RP 180 and RP 190) Forest River’s 2027 R Pod lineup no longer includes the RP 153, but two models — the RP 180 and RP 190 — now fill the role of compact, fully featured single axle trailers in the 20 foot range. While both are larger than our 2026 RP 153, they share the same design philosophy and expand on it with additional interior space and layout flexibility. Both are side-entry trailers.
R Pod RP 180 (2027) • Length: 20' 0" • Key Advantage: Dedicated slide out for the Kitchen and living area • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 3 • Layout Benefit: Separate dining and sleeping areas • Use Case: Ideal for couples who want more interior room and occasional guest space
R Pod RP 190 (2027) • Length: 20' 4" • Key Advantage: Larger slide out and expanded living area • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 4 • Layout Benefit: More open floorplan with improved seating and dining separation • Use Case: Great for couples who host guests or prefer a more spacious interior
How They Compare to Our RP 153 Although both 2027 models are larger, their added length allows for: • Slide outs that increase interior living space • Dedicated dining areas separate from the bed • Additional sleeping capacity for 1–2 guests • More room for storage and movement
Our RP 153 remains slightly lighter, more compact option — perfect for easy towing and travel for two — while the RP 180 and RP 190 offer expanded comfort for those who want more interior flexibility and can’t find the RP-153.
