Our tow vehicle
Our 2022 Subaru Ascent tow vehicle
The 2022 Subaru Ascent has proven to be an ideal tow vehicle for our R-Pod RP153. It offers a strong combination of capability, comfort, and practicality that fits the way we travel. With the factory tow package installed, the Ascent is rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, with a hitch weight of 500 lbs — more than enough for our trailer and gear.
Factory tow package & towing capability
The Ascent's factory tow package includes an upgraded transmission cooler, a Class III hitch, and both 7-pin and 4-pin connectors. Because the hitch is installed at the factory, it is mounted exactly where Subaru engineered it to be, integrated into the frame, and hidden behind a bumper cover when not in use. This setup provides better strength, cleaner aesthetics, and improved reliability compared to aftermarket hitches.
With the full tow package, the Ascent delivers its maximum 5,000-pound towing capacity. It also includes Trailer Stability Assist, which helps maintain control when towing in crosswinds or on uneven roads. This is why a stability hitch setup is not needed.
Interior space & cargo management
Although the Ascent seats seven, we fold down the third row when towing. This creates a large cargo area where we store luggage, foldable bikes, tools, and other items we prefer not to load into the trailer. Keeping weight out of the trailer improves stability and reduces strain on the RP153's suspension and frame.
The Ascent's interior is comfortable for long trips, with supportive seating, a quiet cabin, and a layout that makes extended travel easy.

Brake controller & towing confidence
We had our brake controller professionally installed by Motor Sportsland in Salt Lake City. This ensures the trailer handles its own braking smoothly and consistently. Proper brake control makes a noticeable difference in overall towing confidence, especially on steep grades or during sudden stops.
Monitoring vehicle health while towing
To keep an eye on the Ascent's performance, we use a FOXWELL NT604 Elite OBD2 scanner. It provides live data on transmission temperature, coolant temperature, and other critical systems. This information is especially useful when towing up long grades, allowing us to monitor how the vehicle responds under load.
CVT maintenance & longevity
The Ascent's CVT performs well when maintained properly. We service it every 20,000 to 30,000 miles, which keeps the transmission running smoothly and helps ensure long-term towing reliability. The service is relatively inexpensive at our Subaru dealer, costing around $284. Regular fluid changes are essential for keeping the CVT cool and healthy during towing.
Additional specifications & features
The Ascent includes several features that make it a strong tow vehicle and comfortable daily driver:
- 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER engine
- 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque
- Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
- 8.7 inches of ground clearance
- 19.3-gallon fuel tank
- Approximately 1,300–1,500 pounds of payload capacity depending on trim
- Length: 196.8 inches
- Width: 76 inches
- Height: 71.6 inches
These specifications contribute to stable towing, predictable handling, and good performance in a variety of conditions.
Why it works well for us
For the two of us, the Subaru Ascent strikes an excellent balance. It has the towing capability we need, the interior space we want, and the comfort required for long-distance travel. It handles grades confidently, carries our gear without issue, and remains enjoyable to drive whether towing or not. Combined with proper maintenance and monitoring, it is a reliable and well-rounded tow vehicle for our adventures.
